Our History

North Catholic High School was founded in 1939 by Bishop Hugh Boyle of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the brothers and priests of the Society of Mary.  It succeeded the original Saint Joseph Orphanage built in 1849.  NC was established to provide a Catholic Christian education for the young men of the Pittsburgh parishes located north of the Allegheny River.

In an effort to diversify and enrich the academic environment, young women were permitted to enroll in NC in 1973 and have helped to continue of tradition of academic excellence.

With historic roots above the North Shore of Pittsburgh, NC is a gateway to Troy Hill, a community justifiably proud of its German heritage.  Troy Hill is described as “a tiny neighborhood perched atop a hill in Pittsburgh, (where) thrives a world we think we have lost.  It is a world of loyalty, faith and joy.  Up here, ‘neighbor’ doesn’t mean the person next door or down the street.  It means the entire hill.”  Historic landmarks, local businesses and the neighbors who call Troy Hill home continue this fine tradition that has been their legacy for 150 years.

NC is ideally located within two miles of the cultural and educational districts of the City of Pittsburgh.  We are just minutes from Route 28 as well as Interstates 279 North and South.  NC draws students from all over the Allegheny County area.  We are proud to be a home to students from Butler, Penn Hills, McCandless, Wexford, West View, Bellevue, Cranberry, Mars and Shaler Area.
